What it costs
Approximately 40 per cent of malignancies reported are Leukemias and Lymphomas, which require aggressive chemotherapy and supportive care for few years. The Govt of Kerala is providing free treatment for all pediatric cancer patient belonging to kerala state up to age of 18 years. But the family of cancer affected child has to find out ways to meet non medical expenses like food, transportation, staying outside etc. Also to be taken into consideration are factors like loss of employment of parents, relocation of other siblings of the affected child, their education etc. which add to the financial burden. As the child’s illness continues, the cost of treatment significantly increases to the overall stress of the family. Very few families are able to undergo the rigors of years of treatment without some degree of economic stress. Also patients from neighboring states like Tamilnadu, Karanataka, Lakshadeep and Andamans are not able to avail the cancer suraksha scheme of Govt. of Kerala. They need financial support for medicines, chemotherapy, hospital admission and supportive care. Cost of treatment of a Leukemia Patient comes to approximately 7 to 8 lakhs. Preliminary survey conducted in our department revealed that more than 80 per cent of the families were having financial constraints in addition to their physical as well as mental strain.
